Cartones Ponderosa cuts electricity costs by 50% with Wärtsilä Energy

Cartones Ponderosa S.A. De C.V, a leading producer of coated cardboard in Mexico, faced challenges from fluctuating grid prices and the high cost and environmental impact of running its power plant engines on heavy fuel oil (HFO). Wärtsilä Energy was engaged to address these issues.

Wärtsilä Energy implemented a full Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) project to convert three Wärtsilä 18V34 engines from HFO to run on dual fuels and natural gas. This solution reduced the cost of the electricity produced by approximately 50% and lowered emissions per kW/hour generated. The conversion allowed the plant to run its engines continually and purchase power from the grid only as needed.
