Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc. deploys 116 MW baseload power plant with Wärtsilä Energy

Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc., a gold mining company, faced the challenge of securing reliable baseload power for its remote Nevada mine in high-altitude conditions, which can derate traditional power equipment. They required a flexible, fast-starting, and water-efficient solution. Wärtsilä Energy provided a turnkey natural gas power plant utilizing fourteen Wärtsilä 20V34SG engine generator sets.

The Wärtsilä solution delivered a 116 MW plant that operates efficiently at 1,300 meters without suffering deration. The engines provided superior flexibility, minimal startup time, and reliable baseload capability, which addressed the customer's critical operational and environmental needs. The plant was successfully delivered and started up in 2005.
