Aqualectra boosts Curaçao’s grid with Wärtsilä’s 38.4 MW balancing plant and 25 MW storage

Aqualectra, the energy utility for the island of Curaçao, faced the challenge of meeting rising energy demand and ambitious decarbonization targets while ensuring grid reliability amidst the intermittency of solar and wind power. To address this, they partnered with Wärtsilä.

Wärtsilä implemented a holistic solution including a new 38.4 MW grid balancing engine power plant, a 25 MW / 45 MWh energy storage system, and the GEMS Digital Energy Platform. Through an outcome-based decarbonisation services agreement, Wärtsilä's efforts resulted in a significant step towards maximizing renewable energy use, reducing CO2 emissions intensity, lowering costs, and enhancing energy reliability for the island.
