Case Study: ECIU University enables cross-border verifiable micro-credentials with walt.id

How Finland and Lithuania are introducing digital micro-credentials that enable students to bring and prove their education achievements across borders

ECIU University, a network of European universities, faced the challenge of its students being unable to easily transfer micro-credentials across borders. This lack of a digital, trusted system created significant manual work and prevented students from proving their educational achievements when enrolling at different institutions. The universities sought a secure, compliant solution to make these credentials verifiable and portable.

The vendor walt.id provided its open-source SSI Kit and Wallet, which were fully compliant with EBSI and EU standards. This solution enabled the automated issuance of verifiable credentials that students could own and share. As a result, students gained a portable digital wallet for their achievements, and the project teams successfully laid the groundwork for a scalable, interoperable system for cross-border micro-credentials.
