How EQAR and walt.id use Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) to digitise university accreditations and build a trust infrastructure for the emerging European digital identity ecosystem

The European Quality Assurance Register for Higher Education (EQAR) faced the challenge of adapting to the emerging European digital identity ecosystem (EBSI). They needed to transform their centralized accreditation data into EBSI-compliant, verifiable credentials to maintain their role as a trust anchor. To address this, EQAR partnered with walt.id to leverage their technical expertise in Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI).

walt.id implemented a solution using their open-source SSI Kit, which was easily deployed on EQAR's own infrastructure. This allowed EQAR to automatically issue verifiable accreditations from their existing database. The project was completed swiftly and economically, providing EQAR with a scalable solution that is ready for wide future adoption and establishes a crucial bridge between their data and the new SSI ecosystems.
