How deltaDAO and walt.id used Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) to enable the trust and identity layer of Gaia-X - the European data infrastructure

deltaDAO, a specialist in building solutions for the European data economy, faced the challenge of creating a trust and identity layer for the Gaia-X infrastructure. They needed to integrate Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) that was compliant with eIDAS and ESSIF standards without relying on legacy, centralized platforms, which often lead to lock-in and privacy issues. To do this, they turned to vendor walt.id and its SSI Kit to serve as the identity infrastructure for their Minimal Viable Gaia-X demonstrator.

walt.id set up a managed cloud service, providing its open-source SSI Kit via high-level APIs. This solution abstracted the complex identity layer, allowing deltaDAO to focus on development. As a result, deltaDAO integrated the first iteration of the Gaia-X Trust & Identity Service within just a few weeks and successfully issued the first Gaia-X credentials during a hackathon. The project evolved into a long-term partnership, with walt.id's support enabling a crucial stride forward for the European data infrastructure.
