European Spallation Source (ESS) chooses WALLIX Bastion to secure remote access

European Spallation Source (ESS) is a multidisciplinary research facility in Lund, Sweden, building the world’s most powerful neutron source and hosting up to 3,000 visiting scientists annually from 13 member countries and 100+ partner labs. ESS needed to secure remote installation, control and maintenance of up to 250 sensitive machines (accelerator, target wheel, neutron instruments) while meeting Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) requirements, and selected WALLIX Bastion to address these challenges.

ESS deployed WALLIX Bastion (Access Manager and Session Manager) to mediate and record all remote connections, automate approval workflows, and require session requests to be approved by the control room. WALLIX’s solution reinforced access security, simplified permissions, saved time through process automation, improved remote autonomy for engineers and partners—especially during COVID‑19—and ensured compliance with SSM rules, enabling secure control of ESS’s sensitive equipment.
