Boingo Chooses AWS to Improve BI System Performance

Boingo Wireless, a fast-growing connectivity provider serving airports, stadiums, universities, and military bases, needed a more agile way to support expansion and improve its business intelligence performance. Its on-premises BI environment was too slow, with about 45 minutes of query latency on a year of data and several hours required to load records, making insights difficult for analysts. Boingo turned to W-Systems and AWS, including Amazon Redshift, to address these scaling and performance challenges.

With W-Systems’ support on AWS, Boingo moved most core services to the cloud and used Amazon EC2, Amazon S3, IAM, Amazon Redshift, and Amazon Kinesis Streams to modernize its data platform. The results were dramatic: query time dropped from 45 minutes to 25 seconds, loading one million records fell from several hours to 20 seconds, and support costs fell to about 10% of the prior on-premises data warehouse spend. Boingo also gained faster access to BI data, greater analyst control, and the ability to respond more proactively to service issues.
