Planet Labs runs VyOS for 6+ years to eliminate vendor lock-in

Planet Labs, which operates the world's largest fleet of Earth imaging satellites, needed a highly available and low-latency networking platform for its hybrid infrastructure. The challenge was to avoid vendor lock-in and rising costs from traditional appliance-based vendors while meeting requirements for site-to-site VPN, NAT, and automated failover.

VyOS provided a solution using its Linux-native network OS, deploying two-node high-availability clusters at each site for routing, firewalling, and OSPF. The results included continuous operation through automated failover, greater infrastructure control, and a reliable platform that required minimal intervention. VyOS gave Planet Labs a resilient and sustainable operating model with freedom over hardware choices.
