A VSee Case Study
NASA selected VSee as the official video conferencing platform aboard the International Space Station to provide secure telemedicine and general video communications for astronauts. NASA faced the unique challenge of long round-trip satellite delays and regular data loss in space-to-ground links that cause modern software-based systems like Skype, Vidyo, or Zoom to perform poorly or fail, forcing the agency to rely on older-generation conferencing technology.
VSee implemented a specialized, resilience-focused video chat solution that handles challenged networks, enabling reliable telemedicine consultations, family video calls, real-time collaboration with scientists, school projects, and media viewing on astronauts’ iPads and laptops. By addressing delay and packet-loss issues identified by Byron Smith (Senior Medical IS Engineer at Wyle), VSee’s technology was chosen for use aboard the ISS and has demonstrably restored reliable video communications for NASA’s crew.
