Fisheries and Oceans Canada safeguards glass sponge reefs with Voyis’ 3D monitoring in Howe Sound

Fisheries and Oceans Canada faced the challenge of monitoring fragile glass sponge reefs, a unique ecosystem threatened by human activities, which required accurate data to inform conservation strategies without causing further damage. To meet this need, Voyis provided its Insight Micro Underwater Laser Scanner and Observer Vision Series camera to capture high-resolution data of these sensitive environments.

Voyis implemented a solution using its advanced optical sensors integrated onto ROV and AUV platforms to conduct remote surveys. This enabled the creation of accurate 3D digital twin models of the reefs, which are used to detect changes in reef health over time. The high-resolution data also supported geospatial classification using machine learning, enhancing conservation planning and decision-making for Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
