A “Doggone Good” Way to Manage Volunteers

Blue Dog Rescue (Austin) and Montgomery County Animal Shelter (Houston area) are volunteer-run animal welfare organizations that relied on paper-based, manual processes to schedule volunteers, track attendance and manage communications. Coordinators spent hours each week updating spreadsheets, fielding questions, dealing with liability waivers and lacking reliable email lists, which made event staffing and follow-up difficult.

Both organizations implemented VolunteerHub, an online volunteer-management platform that centralizes contact data, automates registrations, reminders and waivers, enforces attendance limits/waitlists, and enables group messaging. The results: Blue Dog cut coordination time roughly in half and easily staffed a 40-person 5K, while MCAS reduced coordination to about two hours per week, improved attendance and internal communication, and reported better volunteer engagement and program coordination.
