Sphera, the Kline Trading Platform, needed to process hundreds of trading requests per second while running extensive regulatory, suitability and risk checks with no perceptible delay. Facing the performance limits of its legacy, disk‑based framework, Sphera separated operational processing from long‑term storage and selected VoltDB as the in‑memory operational database to meet real‑time, transactional and SQL‑based requirements.

VoltDB was integrated as the in‑memory ACID operational database, providing standard SQL, easy horizontal scaling and native high availability. Parallel production testing showed dramatic gains—database‑driven operations sped up roughly 30–75× (e.g., new order/update timings fell from ~100–260 ms to 2–4 ms, cancels to <1 ms)—and VoltDB’s performance enabled Sphera to pursue real‑time analytics, forecasts and new platform features.
