Case Study: Enexis accelerates smart meter rollout with Vodafone Global Enterprise

Vodafone M2M’s capabilities provide Enexis with the scalability to meet legislation requirements

Enexis, one of the largest energy network operators in the Netherlands, faced the challenge of rolling out millions of smart meters to meet an EU directive. They needed a secure and cost-effective communication solution for these devices, as alternatives like WiFi or powerline connections were not viable. Vodafone Global Enterprise was selected to provide the M2M infrastructure using GPRS connectivity over its mobile network.

The solution involved integrating Vodafone M2M SIMs into each smart meter to transmit encrypted energy consumption data daily. Vodafone also provided a dedicated M2M platform for management and a Service Improvement Plan to resolve initial rollout challenges. The result was a reliable, scalable solution that improved data accuracy for billing, reduced operational costs, and allowed consumers to monitor their usage. The successful partnership helped Enexis progress towards its legislative targets.
