EDP HC ENERGÍA improves consumer energy management with Vodafone IoT

EDP HC ENERGÍA, a leading Spanish energy distributor, faced the challenge of meeting a government mandate to replace traditional meters with smart meters by 2018. Their goal was to not only provide customers with energy usage information but to transform their entire distribution network into a smart grid to improve service quality and efficiency. To achieve this, they partnered with vendor Vodafone Global Enterprise and utilized its Vodafone M2M service and Machine Link 3G routers.

Vodafone provided a complete M2M communications solution, using routers with M2M SIM cards to transmit encrypted data from smart meters over its extensive mobile network. The solution's national roaming feature guaranteed reliable coverage across Spain. This allowed EDP HC ENERGÍA to remotely and accurately read meters in real-time, eliminating manual reads and estimated bills. The vendor's solution also enabled faster fault detection and resolution, significantly improving operational efficiency and customer service for over 650,000 customers.
