A VMware Case Study
Université Laval, a major French‑language research university in Quebec City, consolidated dozens of departmental servers into a Software‑Defined Data Center to improve efficiency, security and cost control. Facing limited space and power, the IT team also wanted to turn excess capacity into a public, multitenant cloud while giving customers autonomous, agile control of their virtual data centers — all without adding staff.
U‑Laval built the Cumulus community cloud on VMware vSphere, NSX and the vCloud Air Network, using network virtualization, micro‑segmentation and automation to deliver isolated, self‑service virtual data centers. The result: fast, low‑cost provisioning, stronger built‑in security, new revenue from public clients (including Quebec City and the Ministry of Tourism), and scalable growth of cloud services without additional personnel.
