Case Study: Queen Margaret University achieves a dynamic, mobile learning environment and improved IT productivity with VMware Horizon 7

A VMware Case Study

Preview of the Queen Margaret University Case Study

UK university creates dynamic learning environment for students

Queen Margaret University (QMU), a modern campus university near Edinburgh, needed to refresh aging thin‑client hardware and simplify management of a complex application estate so students could access course software from any device while improving IT team productivity. The university’s goals included consolidating 100+ applications, delivering a consistent mobile experience, and reducing operational overhead.

QMU implemented VMware Horizon 7 on a Dell EMC VxRail hyperconverged platform to provision virtual desktops and applications from a single VDI solution (rolled out for the 2018 academic year). As a result students can run specialist apps on personal devices with faster, more responsive performance, IT support incidents have fallen, staff productivity has increased, and the environment can scale easily as the university expands its app catalogue and pursues network segmentation for greater security.
