A VMware Case Study
The Christie NHS Foundation Trust is a world-renowned specialist cancer hospital in the UK, treating about 44,000 patients a year across multiple sites with 2,500 staff. Its small IT team faced slow, inflexible infrastructure, limited datacenter space, rising cyber threats and NHS digital mandates—issues that consumed clinician time, increased downtime risk and constrained future digital plans.
Over a decade The Christie implemented a VMware-based virtual infrastructure (vSphere, NSX, Horizon, Workspace ONE, vRealize), virtualizing roughly 90% of its estate to consolidate servers, secure networks and deliver virtual desktops and mobile management. The upgrade produced faster, more secure and highly available services—seamless failover, quicker patching and reduced log-in times—freeing clinicians to focus on patients while enabling the small IT team to deliver greater efficiency, cost savings and resilience (including protection during major cyber-attacks).
