Software-Defined Approach Boosts Operational Efficiency at Catalan Tax Agency

The Catalan Tax Agency, which collects around €2.5 billion a year and supports 1,500 users across 53 offices in Catalonia, faced an urgent IT overhaul while moving to new headquarters: aging, hardware‑heavy infrastructure, limited space, and the need to maintain—and strengthen—security and service continuity during migration.

Working with VMware, the agency deployed NSX, vSAN, vSphere and Horizon to become fully software‑defined, moving to two virtualized corporate data centers and a virtual desktop environment in about six months. The result: micro‑segmentation and tighter security, secure remote access for 1,500 staff, fewer physical racks (seven reduced to two), improved resilience and agility, and roughly a 30% reduction in Opex.
