A VMware Case Study
Sheridan College, a leading Ontario postsecondary institution with around 22,000 full-time students and growing enrollment driven by its strong creative programs, faced pressure to make better use of classroom and data center space while integrating sustainability into campus operations. The college also needed to support distance learning and a BYOD student population, and to scale IT for more applied research and digital coursework without expanding physical labs or increasing energy use.
Sheridan deployed VMware vSphere in its data centers and combined Horizon virtual desktops with vSAN hyper‑converged storage and zero‑client devices to deliver a consistent, mobile 24/7 learning environment. The move doubled virtual desktop capacity (from 800 to 1,600), improved manageability and performance for demanding applications, reduced power, cooling and space needs, lowered IT costs, and supported the college’s sustainability and scalability goals.
