Russian Petrochemical Leader Improves Business Agility

SIBUR, Russia’s largest integrated petrochemical company, needed to improve IT availability at geographically remote production sites, cut the cost of managing branch infrastructure, and support a move to a Software Defined Data Center architecture as part of a wider digitalization program. Internal audits showed some sites lacked sufficient server and storage capacity, prompting a search for a cost‑efficient, reliable hyper‑converged solution.

SIBUR piloted VMware vSAN 6 (alongside vSphere and vRealize tools) at the SIBUR–Kstovo and Biaxplen sites to virtualize storage and simplify operations. The deployment simplified maintenance, increased IT availability by about 50%, produced no service‑interrupting failures in the first year, and delivered roughly 25% savings in capital costs for replacing servers and storage; the company plans to scale vSAN to additional sites.
