Improved Customer Satisfaction in Store for Coop Denmark

Coop Denmark, the country’s largest grocery retailer with more than 1,200 stores and a 42% market share, needed to cut costs and stabilize customer-facing systems in a highly competitive, low‑margin market. Centralizing 1,500 servers onto a single platform caused performance problems and recurring outages (e.g., a weekly two‑minute shutdown from simultaneous antivirus updates) and forced costly workarounds such as moving the loyalty system to dedicated storage.

Coop implemented VMware vSAN—funded from existing maintenance budgets—in a three‑month rollout to consolidate storage, boost IO performance and increase reliability. The platform eliminated downtime, improved till and loyalty‑program responsiveness, removed the need for separate storage solutions, reduced costs, and now underpins all business processes while enabling future personalization and innovation.
