A VMware Case Study
Levanger Kommune, together with neighboring Verdal, is a public-sector IT shared service in Trøndelag, Norway, supporting about 3,000 employees (roughly 1,800 in healthcare) serving a municipality of ~20,000 people. They faced a 20-year-old IT environment with cumbersome login procedures that generated about 50 support cases a month, tying up a 13-person IT team and sometimes preventing timely access to patient medical records.
To fix this they replaced the legacy stack with VMware Horizon and vSphere, virtualizing applications and simplifying authentication so users log in once within their standard environment. A proof-of-concept cut login-related issues from ~50 to 3 cases per month, enabled mobile access for staff, freed IT to focus on strategic work, and let healthcare workers spend less time at screens and more time with patients; the rollout is expanding to additional applications.
