Case Study: National Bank of Georgia achieves resilient, scalable disaster‑recovery and continuous financial services with VMware vSAN and vSphere

Ensuring the Stability of Georgia’s Financial Sector

The National Bank of Georgia, the country’s central bank responsible for monetary policy and processing national-currency payments, faced a critical availability challenge: its Real Time Gross Settlement system handles interbank Lari transactions for commercial banks, and any outage could stop bank-to-bank business. The bank needed a disaster-proof, more agile and cost-effective IT infrastructure to ensure continuous service delivery and protect the stability of Georgia’s financial sector.

To address this, NBG built a third disaster-recovery data center in Batumi (350 km from the core) using VMware vSphere and vSAN on standard Dell x86 servers, implemented with partner HT Solutions. The hyperconverged, vendor-agnostic deployment was rapid and scalable, supports instant policy changes, is regularly tested for failover, and now ensures uninterrupted transaction processing in case of failures—NBG is evaluating expanding vSAN to its core datacenters.
