Digital Pioneer Relies on Virtual Desktops for 3d Visualisation

The Land Registry and Surveying Office of the Canton of Basel‑Stadt (GVA) is a public‑sector geodata provider in Basel that operates the cantonal geoportal and 3D city models for professionals and citizens. It struggled with a growing user base running complex GIS and CAD applications in parallel, which overwhelmed an aging VDI stack and caused performance drops and inconsistent experiences across devices.

Partnering with BUSINESS IT AG, GVA rebuilt its environment using VMware vSphere 6.5, Horizon 7, App Volumes, NVIDIA vGPU, HPE all‑flash storage and a dual‑site deployment to centralize and scale virtual desktops. The new VDI restored performance, enabled seamless parallel use of multiple GIS apps on any device, allowed GPU sharing (8–16 users per card), sped up updates and 3D visualizations, improved citizen services and made the platform easier to manage and expand.
