City Virtualizes and Secures Infrastructure to Better Enable Agencies

The City of North Las Vegas, home to about 240,000 residents, entered 2013 with a $152 million long-term budget deficit and a workforce reduced by more than half. Leadership needed to modernize technology to improve resident services and emergency response, increase IT productivity without adding headcount, and cut operating costs while supporting growth across a geographically dispersed municipality.

Partnering with VMware, the city virtualized servers, desktops, storage and networking (vSphere, Horizon, vSAN, NSX, vRealize), deployed VDI for libraries, firefighters and staff, and implemented micro-segmentation and a hybrid DR site. In under four years the city returned to a balanced budget, enabled a 22‑person IT team to do the work of a typical 70+ staff, realized savings of roughly $100,000 per 125 PCs over three years, accelerated permitting and economic development, and delivered measurable gains in jobs, business space and capital investment.
