Business Agility Becomes Reality at American Tire Distributors

American Tire Distributors (ATD), the largest replacement tire distributor in the U.S., was growing 10–20% annually and expanding channels like a new consumer storefront, franchising and acquisitions. To support high transaction volumes across 85 distribution centers and ensure rapid, on-demand scaling and high availability—particularly for its Oracle E-Business Suite and RAC databases—ATD needed a more nimble, resilient IT architecture and stronger disaster recovery.

Working with House of Brick, ATD virtualized its application and database tiers on VMware and migrated from PA‑RISC to HP ProLiant servers, validating performance with Oracle Real Application Testing. The result: faster provisioning (new servers in under 30 minutes), significantly better database performance than legacy hardware, improved hardware utilization (from ~10% toward 70–80%), enhanced high availability and more robust DR—putting ATD on track for full virtualization.
