Building the Platform for Nursing’s Evolution with the Royal College of Nursing

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) is the world’s largest nursing union and professional body, representing more than 435,000 nurses, student nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants in the UK. Facing pressure to help members become “e‑nurses” while protecting sensitive membership data and enabling staff and members to work remotely, the RCN needed a secure, scalable and flexible digital infrastructure that wouldn’t slow everyday access to services and training.

Working with VMware, the College moved to a largely virtual environment and deployed NSX, Horizon VDI and upgraded vSphere to segment and secure applications with identity‑based and distributed firewall policies. The result is faster, secure access to member data for staff on the road or in call centres, protected membership information, and reliable remote access for members to training and support — creating a scalable platform for the RCN’s ongoing digital transformation.
