A VMware Case Study
Berliner Stadtreinigung (BSR) is Berlin’s municipal sanitation company, serving about 3.7 million residents with roughly 5,400 employees. Facing slow logon/logoff at 2,000 offices, high administration costs from hardware failures and migrations, the need for better IT security, a smaller ecological footprint, and a time-consuming manual process for reporting unemptied bins, BSR set out to modernize its workplace and field IT.
BSR implemented VMware Workspace ONE (AirWatch), Horizon 7, vSAN and App Volumes—piloting 80 zero clients and deploying about 1,200 virtual desktops (with a mid-term target of 1,700) and a mobile app on Android devices. The rollout delivered faster logins, flexible remote access, lower admin effort and hardware downtime, improved security and reduced environmental impact, while the mobile app enables collectors to photograph and report unemptied bins directly into SAP, speeding customer updates and cutting manual work (investment ~€800k).
