American Red Cross Portal Simplifies Access and Management

The American Red Cross, a nationwide non-profit based in Washington, D.C., needed to modernize IT for a highly mobile workforce that relied on outdated hardware and inconsistent app access. Staff and volunteers required rapid, secure access to legacy, web, SaaS and VDI/RDS applications from any device or location to support 24/7 disaster response, and IT sought a unified way to manage organization-issued and personal endpoints.

The Red Cross built a “Virtual Workplace” using VMware Workspace ONE, Horizon, App Volumes, Identity Manager and User Environment Manager to provide a single portal and SSO to 150+ apps. The solution delivers virtual desktops and apps from the data center, supports legacy software, speeds work in low-bandwidth areas, enables sub‑hour onboarding with fewer help‑desk calls, and now serves more than 10,000 unique users daily while reducing image management overhead and improving field productivity.
