Air Freight Carrier Takes Off with In-Flight Digital Workspace Built on VMware

Lufthansa Cargo, a Frankfurt‑based air freight carrier, faced deteriorating availability and reliability of critical flight information due to an aging, proprietary electronic flight bag (EFB). The slow, complex system added about 40 kg of cockpit hardware, complicated certification with aviation authorities, drove up IT costs, and hindered pilots’ ability to access aeronautical charts, route data and weather reports quickly during operations.

Working with VMware, Lufthansa Cargo replaced the legacy EFB with a standards‑based digital workspace using VMware AirWatch and lightweight iPads. The new mobile solution improved reliability and faster access to vital data, cut system weight (saving fuel costs), reduced IT maintenance and approval cycles, and boosted logistical performance and safety by letting crews get the right information when and where they need it.
