A VMware Case Study
Salzburger Landeskliniken (SALK), the largest healthcare provider in the Salzburg region with some 5,000 staff and a growing network of hospitals, needed a reliable way for nurses to capture and access patient records on mobile devices around the clock. Faced with duplicated resources across facilities, strict GDPR and security requirements, and a rising number of notebooks to manage across 90 nursing stations, SALK required a high‑availability, fast‑booting solution that avoided downtime and lengthy device setup.
SALK worked with VMware and Toshiba to deploy Toshiba Mobile Zero Clients with the VMware Horizon VDI client integrated in the BIOS and connected to SALK’s on‑site servers (no cloud). Devices boot quickly, store no local data, and were integrated into SALK’s Wi‑Fi certification and centralized management. About 100 units are live with no disruptions, delivering transparent documentation, lower hardware and software costs (no Microsoft licensing), faster provisioning and updates, and strong nurse acceptance — with plans to expand to all stations.
