A VMware vSAN Case Study
Zettagrid Pty Ltd, a Perth-based infrastructure-as-a-service provider operating more than 4,000 VMs across three Australian data centers, faced risks from intermingled customer and management workloads and storage outages caused by a non‑segregated SAN management cluster. To avoid downtime, reduce SAN operational complexity, and separate management from production, Zettagrid turned to VMware vSAN.
Zettagrid implemented VMware vSAN hyper-converged four-node Virtual SAN clusters on Dell PowerEdge FX2 in each cloud zone (each node hosting four servers and ~9 TB of storage) to isolate management workloads and simplify operations. Within four months VMware vSAN delivered easier management and scalability, freed capacity that Zettagrid monetized to increase revenue, deferred large hardware purchases to reduce costs, and improved the team’s ability to grow the platform organically.
