A VMware vSAN Case Study
Wachter, Inc., a Lenexa, Kansas–based provider of infrastructure solutions, was running out of storage capacity in its VMware vSphere environment and struggling with slow, manual provisioning, difficult application-to-storage mapping, and high scaling costs. To address these issues the company adopted VMware vSAN (Virtual SAN) as part of a hyperconverged VMware solution.
Wachter deployed VMware vSAN on three Cisco UCS C240 M3 nodes to build a 45 TB cluster, cutting storage cost to under $1.50/GB (about one-fifth the cost of traditional SANs), delivering roughly 10x the performance of its legacy platform, simplifying management, and enabling new VMs with storage to be provisioned in 10–15 minutes while preserving DR with Site Recovery Manager. VMware vSAN’s hyperconverged design produced clear cost, performance, and operational gains for Wachter.
