A VMware vSAN Case Study
Union Hospital, a not‑for‑profit healthcare system headquartered in Terre Haute, IN with 20 hospitals and clinics and 3,000+ users, needed storage that could support an agile IT environment for tier‑1 applications and virtual desktop infrastructure. Facing high database latency and slow reporting on a traditional SAN, Union Hospital chose VMware vSAN to modernize its storage for critical workloads.
VMware vSAN was deployed for tier‑1 apps and VDI, producing dramatic, measurable gains: database latency dropped from 200 ms to <1 ms (200× faster), reporting time fell from 30 minutes to 5 minutes (6× faster), application launch times improved from ~30 seconds to 5–10 seconds (3–6× faster), IOPS rose from 900 to 53,000 (50×), and virtual sessions increased from 40 to 60 (50% more). By implementing VMware vSAN, Union Hospital achieved efficient scaling and significant performance improvements that drove broader adoption across departments.
