Tamkang University Software Cloud Enhanced with New GPU Functions and VMware Virtual SAN

Tamkang University needed a scalable, cost‑effective way to deliver licensed desktop and engineering software to faculty and students on any device while supporting GPU‑accelerated applications and reducing storage overhead. To address this, Tamkang University partnered with VMware vSAN (alongside VMware Horizon View and vSphere) to build the Tamkang Software Cloud that provides on‑demand access to applications for thousands of users.

The solution used VMware vSAN as software‑defined storage with vSphere/Horizon View for virtualization and GPU desktops, deploying 200 desktop VMs on five hosts and enrolling about 6,000 users (nearly 50,000 log‑ins). VMware vSAN dramatically lowered storage TCO, shortened environment preparation from two weeks to one day, reduced host count and IDC/power costs, and—together with vCenter Operations Management Suite—automated monitoring to cut manpower and improve reliability.
