A VMware vSAN Case Study
Clover School District in South Carolina needed to quickly upgrade aging computer labs to comply with new state Windows-based online testing standards while future-proofing infrastructure and limiting capital and operational costs. To avoid replacing hundreds of PCs, the district chose a virtual desktop approach using VMware Horizon together with VMware vSAN to centralize processing and storage and convert existing desktops into thin clients.
Using VMware Horizon and VMware vSAN, the district deployed a 100-seat pilot (planned to scale to 800 users) that pooled server-attached drives into a resilient hyper‑converged datastore, repurposed desktops as thin clients, and sped application and backup performance from minutes to seconds. The VMware vSAN solution cut storage capital costs by about 75%, saved the district nearly $1 million in PC replacement costs, reduced pilot hardware expenses by more than $150,000, and delivered greater system resilience with no user impact during node failures.
