A VMware vSAN Case Study
The City of North Las Vegas faced a severe budget and staffing crisis and needed to modernize IT to improve resident services, give emergency teams mobile access, reduce OpEx, and enable a small IT staff to support a growing city. To address these challenges the City engaged VMware vSAN (alongside other VMware solutions) to virtualize servers, desktops, storage and networking and eliminate the overhead of traditional hardware.
Using VMware vSAN as the core storage platform—together with VMware vSphere, Horizon and NSX—the city deployed VDI, virtualized police, fire and back‑office apps, and built DR and all‑flash vSAN clusters. VMware vSAN helped the City of North Las Vegas recover to a fully funded budget in under four years and drove measurable impact: a 7,000% increase in jobs, 2,000% more business space, 4,000% more capital investment, a 22‑person IT team versus 70+ at peers, and an estimated $100,000 saved over three years for every 125 PCs moved to VDI.
