A VMware vSAN Case Study
At Home Co., Ltd., a pioneer in real estate information services in Japan operating more than 54,000 affiliate offices and running over 800 virtual machines, faced rising costs and operational complexity from dedicated shared storage—long procurement cycles, server/storage lifecycle mismatches, and high specialized skills required. To modernize its VMware vSphere–based infrastructure and reduce the burden of external SANs, At Home evaluated and selected VMware vSAN.
At Home deployed VMware vSAN beginning with a three‑host test cluster in early 2015 and expanded to additional hosts and clusters, using vSAN’s pooled SSD/HDD storage to eliminate expensive external arrays. VMware vSAN delivered stable, better‑than‑expected performance, allowed synchronized server/storage procurement and multi‑vendor hardware choices, and significantly reduced shared‑storage cost, labor and the time from design to operation (from months to a fraction); today roughly one‑fifth of At Home’s ~800 VMs run on vSAN with plans to migrate more workloads.
