Discover’s Cloud Solutions team set out to modernize application delivery using Pivotal Platform (now VMware Tanzu) but ran into growing‑pains: self‑taught agile practices weren’t delivering, the platform had single points of failure and single AZs, upgrades were manual and inconsistent, and the foundations no longer matched reference architecture best practices.

The team rebuilt the platform from the ground up, ran a six‑week “Day 2 Ops” dojo with Pivotal, adopted agile rituals, pair programming and Concourse CI/CD, and automated installations and upgrades. The outcome was a consistent, repeatable, automated Pivotal/Tanzu foundation—capable of cadence upgrades (four major upgrades in 2018), improved collaboration with application teams and IaaS partners, and an ongoing product‑focused transformation to deliver faster, more reliable services.
