Humana Leads Charge for Digital Transformation In Louisville

Humana, the health insurer serving 13.8 million members, set out to become a technology-driven company so it could deliver interactive mobile healthcare tools and learn from members faster. The challenge was to break from traditional IT practices, speed innovation, and make development more responsive to evolving user needs.

Humana partnered with Pivotal Labs, adopted agile practices (MVP focus, test‑driven development, pair programming) and built a downtown Louisville Digital Experience Center staffed by Pivots and Humana engineers to teach and scale the approach. Since June 2014 the team has shipped a dozen-plus HumanaVitality updates on a multi‑week cadence, rapidly adapted to new platforms like the Apple Watch, and won executive support for embedding this agile culture across the company.
