A VMware Tanzu Case Study
Ford Motor Company created Ford Smart Mobility to compete with new tech-driven entrants and capture opportunities in the emerging $5.4 trillion mobility-services market. Facing pressures from connected, shared, autonomous and electric trends, Ford launched the FordPass app and partnered with Pivotal and Microsoft (including a $182M investment in Pivotal) to transform its customer experience and operate more like a software startup.
Using a cloud-native architecture on Pivotal Cloud Foundry and Microsoft Azure—with services such as RabbitMQ, MySQL, Pivotal GemFire (WAN replication), and an active‑active foundation design—Ford shifted to Agile and DevOps practices and developer self-service. The result is a resilient, scalable platform powering FordPass features (marketplace, perks, concierge, remote vehicle services) and a dramatically faster delivery model: changes that once took months now roll out in days, accelerating Ford’s transition to an auto-and-mobility company.
