Albertsons, the second-largest U.S. grocer with more than 2,200 stores and roughly 30 million customers weekly, faced an abrupt, massive shift from in-store to online shopping when COVID-19 hit. The pandemic drove record-breaking e-commerce demand that threatened to overwhelm the company’s platform and required rapid, reliable scaling.
Albertsons had already migrated to a microservices-based e-commerce platform using Tanzu Application Service on Azure and partnered closely with VMware and Microsoft for support and monitoring (including AppDynamics). That setup—and autoscaling set far above past peaks—allowed the retailer to absorb up to 10× normal traffic with zero customer downtime, processing 100,000+ orders per day and delivering a 450% jump in digital sales and a 39% overall sales increase during the initial months.
