Case Study: Carina achieves a rapid 11-day app launch and thousands of child-care matches with VMware Tanzu

From project launch to app launch in just 11 days

Carina is a Seattle-based technology nonprofit that connects verified, licensed care providers with families in need of child care and home care. When COVID-19 pushed small in-home daycares to the brink and essential workers suddenly needed reliable care, Carina needed a fast, low-cost way to match parents with local, reputable providers—so they partnered with VMware Pivotal Act to build a solution quickly.

Using ruthless prioritization, user-centered design, pair programming, and infrastructure-as-code, the teams built, launched, and iterated a childcare-matching app in just 11 days. Within a week the site had 1,600 registered providers offering 8,000 openings and 12,000 parent users, expanded into multiple states with local endorsements and support, and left Carina with the tools and practices to continue improving and scaling the service.
