A VMware Tanzu Case Study
GCI, Alaska’s largest communications provider serving urban centers and 240 rural communities across a territory larger than several states, needed to modernize IT as it expanded services. Siloed provisioning, bespoke database servers and long lead times were slowing developer velocity and driving up operational complexity and costs, so the company sought a scalable private‑cloud platform and a better operating model.
GCI implemented VMware Cloud Foundation with VMware Tanzu Data Services to standardize, simplify and automate its infrastructure and deliver database‑as‑a‑service. The unified platform let GCI scale from about 450 VMs to 4,500, cut patching cycles from months to days, deploy a new data center in months, speed application delivery, control operating expenses and enable on‑demand data services — laying groundwork for private AI initiatives.
