Sumitomo Bakelite Europe Upgrades Connections Between its Production Sites with VMware SD-WAN

Sumitomo Bakelite High Performance Plastic Products Europe (SBHPP), a leading maker of phenolic resins with three European sites, needed a faster, more secure and cost-effective way to link its production locations while meeting strict Seveso safety and cybersecurity requirements. The company wanted to cut annual network costs and reduce dependency on a single MPLS provider without compromising redundancy or performance—needs amplified by increased remote-working demands from the COVID-19 pandemic.

SBHPP replaced its MPLS links with VMware SD-WAN, deployed onsite by partner Agisko, using redundant SD‑WAN Edge devices and multiple local carriers. The new setup cut data-line costs by up to 60% (about €72,000 per year), lowered latency (14 ms to 8 ms), improved redundancy and provider flexibility, delivered centralized monitoring via the SD‑WAN Orchestrator, and achieved payback in roughly 1 year and 8 months.
