Sd-WAN Introduces Efficiency and Automation to Largest Privately Held Corporate Merger

Dell Technologies — formed by Dell’s $67B acquisition of EMC in 2016 — needed to unify decades of separate WANs supporting hundreds of thousands of employees, 19 data centers, ~20,000 network devices and thousands of applications. Both legacy networks relied on MPLS and backhauled internet traffic to data centers, creating bandwidth bottlenecks, manual CLI-driven policy changes, and complexity as cloud and mobile usage grew across hundreds of global sites.

Dell deployed VMware SD‑WAN by VeloCloud, consolidating roughly 500 sites to 270, tiering locations by size and connectivity, and shifting traffic from expensive MPLS to broadband where appropriate. The SD‑WAN centralized orchestration automated policy updates, added native edge firewalling, improved visibility and dynamic path optimization, and delivered higher bandwidth, lower transport costs, reduced operational overhead, and more proactive network management.
