SD-WAN for industrial 3D printing and robot automation

Deutsche Telekom’s Silicon Valley Innovation Center (SVIC) needed a fast, low‑cost way to connect its Mountain View lab with sites in Berlin to support industrial 3D printing and robotic automation without redesigning its existing MPLS infrastructure. The challenge was to simplify orchestration, provide agile, SLA-backed secure connectivity across continents, and minimize management overhead so devices and automation could be managed centrally and deployed quickly.

SVIC deployed VMware SD‑WAN (VeloCloud) as an overlay, installing Edge devices and Gateways and using the Orchestrator to set SLAs over secure VPNs, insert services at the edge or cloud, and enable SDN programmability and dynamic multipath optimization. The solution was operational in under a week, delivering predictable application performance, centralized orchestration and visibility, and the ability to scale and manage robotic and 3D‑printing traffic across locations.
