Kimley-Horn Builds Better Connections with VMware SD-WAN

Kimley‑Horn, a U.S. civil engineering and design consultancy with more than 7,000 staff across 100+ offices, was expanding rapidly—adding up to 20 sites per quarter—and struggling with legacy MPLS WANs that took 60–90 days to provision, required costly backup circuits, and left offices vulnerable to outages and manual failover. These connectivity issues repeatedly stalled productivity and impeded the firm’s move to a cloud‑first model.

Kimley‑Horn deployed AT&T SD‑WAN with VMware—using dual active‑active internet links, the VMware SASE Orchestrator and Dynamic Multipath Optimization—and moved virtual SD‑WAN and Horizon workloads into Azure. The result: much faster provisioning (Internet circuits in about a week), reliable automatic failover with fewer and shorter outages, better large‑file performance, simpler centralized “golden” configs for rapid office rollouts, reduced troubleshooting and site visits, and smoother cloud migration and disaster recovery.
