Bancolombia connects branches and ATMs with VMware SD-WAN

Bancolombia, the largest bank in Colombia with over 140 years of history, 22,000 employees and more than 20 million clients, faced rising costs and capacity limits from expanding MPLS links across its branch and ATM network. The bank needed better traffic visibility, faster branch provisioning, stronger security and compliance with financial regulations, and improved performance for SaaS and cloud applications while reducing operational complexity and cost.

Bancolombia deployed VMware SD‑WAN across branches and ATMs (initial rollout to 642 branches and 1,270 ATMs, with plans for 2,400 locations), moving much traffic to Internet links with parallel MPLS to increase capacity ~10x and enable encrypted, segmented tunnels for compliance. The solution delivered centralized management and automation, dramatically faster deployments (hours vs. months—680 branches in four months), improved app performance and monitoring, enhanced security, and early estimates of ~20% lower branch/ATM maintenance costs within two years.
